Every contest has it's personalities, it's eccentricities, it's unique venue, it's own Day In The Sun. The Bakersfield Pacific Yo-Yo Championships were certainly no exception. The easy way is to say it is It Was HOT !!! . It was also a role model, as each contest is. Every participant is challenged to do just a little bit better than they did the last time. And many did ô¿~

The State of Yo is about that perfect place where every trick is done on stage, in front of an enthusiastic and appreciative crowd, absolutely correctly the first time every time. Then, it's about getting as many things right as you can today.

The Pacific Yo-Yo Championships were immediately notable because of the 'venue.' Nestled in the heart of the salad bowl of California, the Bakersfield venue understood it's own nature. The roof was open on three sides. The sun shone in from behind, and the breeze, what breeze there was, was ushered through the people and out the opening on the other side. Somewhere I remembered that cold on the neck was good in the heat, so I was quite comfortable with my wet towel and drinking lots of water.

The contest was hot in several other notable ways. It attracted contestants from Germany, the United Kingdom, Tennesse, Arizona, Nevada, other places I'm sure and, of course, California. Contingents from Team Pro Yo and Golden Apple Comics represented them extremely well, as did each of the many contestants. Matt Harlow was, there representing Team Spintastics, as was Dale Oliver. John Stangle was present and did his 'normal' exquisite job, and Bill de Boisblanc and Don Harrison helped demonstrate, play, and judge the contest. SoCô¿ôL Bob and Sean Bressie were there taking pictures, as were representatives of every other major Bakersfield media. All the TV Channels, the newspaper and even the mayor participated by declaring July 10, 1999 Official Yo-Yo Day in the City of Bakersfield. Matt Harlow, John Stangle, Bill de Boisblanc and others were featured on the news from morning 'til night on local television shows. Coverage of the contest played a major role in the evening news and highlights of the event were featured "On The Front Page". Between that, and the Ladie's World Cup victory, it was one heck of a day in sports ô¿~.

The compulsories featured a number of exciting tie breakers, more than one of which featured one or more of the excellent female contestants. If you can do Atom Smasher with four somersaults and a looping dismount, while on stage in front a crowd in 100 degree heat, after you've just learned the trick, then it was all no big deal. Maybe it would be a bigger deal if you were a girl and you were 10 years old. Yo'er right, it didn't seem like that big a deal to her either.

There were more Free Style contestants than I've had the pleasure of seeing in any previous contest, including the National Championships ( I think about 13 individual freestyles ). Most of the freestylers demonstrated not only their creativity, but their extreme competance with both one and two handed play. It's still incredible to me, the notion that there could be multiple players who can do two handed over head reverse loops, as a move from some other incredible combination, including while lying on the ground or even while contorting their own body an additional forty five degrees. Incredible, but totally true, as any one viewing the video or attending a similar contest will clearly see.

Enjoy the Pix .... SoCô¿ôL Bob and Sean Bressie are busy editting the lengthy footage we got at the contest. First it will be broadcast on Santa Rosa Community Television and then we'll see.

Don't miss the Pix at the end. They are of the venue for the Western Regional Yo-Yo Championships coming September 25, 1999, to the Fashion Fair Mall in Fresno, California.
